Festivart

From 1 to 20 July 2020, the municipality of Lavagna hosted the first edition of Festivart, a participatory art festival featuring the artists of Artakademy, who painted murals to recolour part of our city.

The festival was a way to make artistic expression, in its most varied forms, an effective instrument of society and culture.

Festivart put locals and visitors side by side with local, Italian and foreign artists, authors of street poetry, murals and urban design, which made our town a largee public and participatory art space.

Town of the three flags

The Municipality of Lavagna is the only one in all of north-western Italy that has been awarded both in 2019 and 2020 the Blue Flag (clean sea), the Green Flag (ideal beaches for children and their families) and the Spiga Verde (eco-sustainable tourism).

The "town of three flags" offers you tourist services based on wellness, health and relaxation: come and enjoy our 4 km of beach, our typical specialties and the many cultural attractions and naturalistic curiosities that characterize our territory.a

Animals and nature

The municipality of Lavagna happens to be home to one of the most important bird-watching sites in Liguria, on the Entella river.

Here many birds find the environmental conditions and quiet they need to breed in peace.

Among the bird species that nest along the Entella are the little ringed plover, a typical bird of river deposits with pebbles and gravel, and the kingfisher, which winters in the lower part of the river and nests upstream of the oasis.

Migrations take place in spring and autumn, making these ideal times to visit the bird-watching area.

Here in the Lavagna plain, migrating aquatic birds find one of the few flat coastal stretches in all of Liguria and the last unusual wetland, an essential stop for many of them.

Together with those already mentioned, you can spot the coot, grey plover, yellow-legged gull, shoveler and black tern.

Torta dei Fieschi

Since 1949, the Torta dei Fieschi has been held in Lavagna on 14 August. This historic event records the marriage between Count Opizzo Fiesco and the Sienese noblewoman Bianca de' Bianchi, which took place in 1230. The parade opens with the descent of the count from his horse. He then walks up the steps of the Basilica of Santo Stefano to meet his bride and crosses the whole city with ladies, knights, maids, soldiers, drums, flags and horses, surrounded by hundreds of extras all in strict costume. They end in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, at the foot of the Fieschi Tower, where the symbolic cutting of the vast cake (torta) takes place. According to tradition, the bride and groom would have given this cake as a gift to the population to celebrate the union between their two families.
