The Fieschi’s cake (Torta dei Fieschi) is a historical event that takes place in Lavagna on the 14th of August every year since 1949. This festival commemorates the wedding, which took place in 1230, between the count Opizzo Fiesco and the noblewoman Bianca de’ Bianchi. The sumptuous parade begins with the count dismounting from his horse and riding down the steps of the Basilica di Santo Stefano to meet his bride. It then passes through the entire city with ladies, knights, maids, soldiers, drums, flags and horses, with hundreds of participants, all rigorously dressed in costume, until the arrival in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, at the foot of the Fieschi Tower, where the symbolic cutting of the huge cake takes place. Ten quintals of cake that can only be tasted by looking for one’s partner in the middle of the square, a game that has been going on for decades and that entertains young and old alike.
